The Van Diest Medical Center Pharmacy Department is responsible for all aspects of medication administration in the hospital. The department is led by two full-time pharmacists and staffed with state-certified Pharmacy Technicians.

The pharmacy’s goal is to provide patients with safe, effective and cost efficient medication therapy with minimal side effects. Pharmacists are available for consultation and questions 24 hours a day.  The department evaluates and monitors patient medication regimens as part of the caregiver team. This team includes the physician, nurses and other hospital caregivers. Each medication is reviewed for how it will affect patients during and after their hospital stay.

The department also offers outpatient infusion services in the hospital's Infusion Center and Emergency Department for a variety of medications, including chemotherapy regimens and antibiotic treatments. The Pharmacy assists in all infusion therapy treatments through medication monitoring, medication therapy evaluation and dose calculation as well as patient counseling for prescription, over-the-counter and herbal formulations.

An automated dispensing cabinet for medication, computerized patient profiles (electronic medical record), and bar code technology are all utilized in the pharmacy.

Pharmacy hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and a pharmacist is available on-call around the clock.

Our pharmacists also serve as a site and preceptors for students from the University of Iowa School of Pharmacy professional experience program.
