Van Diest Medical Center

Pharmacy

Our Department

The Van Diest Medical Center Pharmacy Department is responsible for all aspects of medication administration in the hospital. We have two full-time pharmacists who have 68 years of combined experience.  All Pharmacy Technicians are state certified.

The pharmacy’s goal is to provide patients with safe, effective and cost efficient medication therapy with minimal side effects. The pharmacists are available for consultation and questions 24 hours a day.  We evaluate and monitor patient medication regimens as part of the team that includes the physician, nurses and other hospital caregivers.  Each medication is reviewed for how it will affect patients during and after their hospital stay.

The department offers outpatient infusion services through the Emergency Department, medication monitoring, medication therapy evaluation, dose calculation and patient counseling for prescription, OTC and herbal formulations.

An automated dispensing cabinet for medication, computerized patient profiles (electronic medical record), and bar code technology are all utilized in the pharmacy.

Pharmacy hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, but a pharmacist is available on-call around the clock.

Van Diest Medical Center’s Pharmacy Department and pharmacists serve as a site and preceptors for students from the University of Iowa School of Pharmacy professional experience program.
