October 2019 C.A.R.E.S. Award
VDMC Volunteer Joyce Gelhaus was nominated by a group of employees for being an outstanding volunteer for VDMC. Her nomination read, “Joyce is always outside the hospital and clinic entrances sprucing up the flowers, pulling weeds and greeting patients, visitors, and staff with her contagious smile. She makes our courtyard desirable for hospital patients to enjoy out their window; and staff and visitors enjoy the patio area during a break or for lunch. Countless hours are volunteered by her throughout the year. As she makes VDMC beautiful with everything she does. Recently groups of visitors and community members have commented to multiple staff members how much they appreciate how beautiful our courtyard is, and we proudly give the credit to Joyce who spends so much of her time volunteering to make VDMC look SO good. Joyce was even mentioned by a front-line colleague in one of our October Employee Forums for her dedicated work volunteering for SHIIP (SHIIP stands for Senior Health Insurance Information Program). She volunteers by helping seniors navigate the often challenging and confusing world of Medicare and supplemental insurance. Collectively Joyce and Dalene have saved the seniors of Hamilton and Webster counties thousands of dollars, by assisting them with knowing what types of supplemental insurances will meet their needs best; so seniors are not paying for additional costly supplemental insurance policies they do not need. Because of Joyce our hospital looks like a Hawaiian resort and our patients receive affordable, quality care they deserve.”
Thank you for, Joyce, for the difference you make at VDMC!
