Job Details
A clinically competent certified surgical technologist who works under the supervision of the registered nurse in delivering safe and effective care to the patient during the intraoperative period. S/he prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during and on the surgical field, passing instruments. S/he assists with standard work and room turnover. This position performs other scrub duties as directed, under supervision. Responsible for staff direction in preparing equipment and instruments for re-use by decontamination, and storage. Effectively interacts with patients and health care team members, while maintaining the surgical department standards. Fosters positive environment and ensures effective communication flows between all necessary parties involved in the continuum of care. Follows the established chain of command. Coordinates closely with Materials Manager and Surgery Manager to maintain and manage the surgery inventory for the surgery area. Serves as a resource and liaison for staff, physicians, and vendors regarding purchasing, materials management and troubleshooting inventory problems. Audits supply distribution.
Day shift, 40 hours per week, Call Rotation is minimal.
Essential Functions:
A. Patient care
- Maintains asepsis.
- Performs scrubbing duties.
- Performs preceptor duties.
- Conscientiously and continuously applies the principles and tools learned during CQI training daily.
- Audit processes designed to reduce risk and create safe environment.
B. Interpersonal skills
- Communicates with peers, other health team members, patients, visitors.
- Supports unit team.
- Consistently meets the hospital’s Customer Service Quality Standards.
- Performs clinical preceptor role for specialty service and follows core competency outline.
- Actively participate, presents staff education and positively contributes to staff meetings.
- Communicated product changes and new products. Collaborates with department staff to evaluate new supplies, equipment and instruments.
C. Care of environment and equipment
- Maintains unit.
- Maintains and cleans equipment.
D. Information processing documentation
- Communicates patient information to the surgery team.
- Documents information.
- Charges for equipment and supplies.
- Uses computer systems efficiently.
- Ensures availability of necessary surgical instruments for all procedures.
- Works closely with the OR staff and providers to provide required instrumentation.
- Communicated product changes and new products. Collaborates with department staff to evaluate new supplies, equipment, and instruments.
- Assists Manager in education of the staff.
- Assists Manager in developing and maintaining departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensures completion and implementation of quality improvement activities. Participates in department quality and /or process improvement committee.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:
A. Central Service/Instrument
- Processing and storing reusable instruments, utensils, and supplies in the decontamination, prep, and pack department.
- Monitoring instrument processing equipment.
- Maintenance of cleaning and equipment testing schedules.
- Participates in the weekly/monthly cleaning duties of the OR department and documents accordingly.
- Performs individual departmental competencies
B. Materials/Surgery Materials Management
- Monitors, Audits, Orders, and manages inventory in Surgery.
- Department/Endoscopic area and Central Supply
- Receives and stocks inventory.
- Works with Surgery manager to maintain monthly budget.
- Works with Materials Representatives for surgery supplies.
- Performs periodic inventory counts as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (CST – Certified Surgical Technologist) or formal structure surgical program (e.g., military services)
- Must possess a minimum of (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.
- Functions independently in majority of services with minimal assistance. Capable of performing common emergency cases proficiently
- Solves problems rapidly with changes in the clinical situation.
- Anticipates availability of equipment and prioritizes usage.
- Sets up equipment independently.
- General computer usage
- Demonstrates critical thinking capabilities.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge and proficient practice in the scrub role in the majority of surgical procedures or will be trained within the first 6 months.
- Should possess the ability to understand and react effectively to the unique needs and care for all patient populations (i.e., neonatal, pediatrics, adolescents, and geriatrics).
- BLS – Basic Life Support
- Completes the orientation competency checklist within required time frame.
Must be able to meet the physical requirements as outlined in the Job Requirements document.
This position requires successful completion of a Physical Capacity Profile screening.
